About the artist

Lucia Laguna (b. 1941) is a Brazilian painter who began her artistic career later in life, after retiring from a three-decade tenure as a Portuguese and Latin teacher. Born in Campos dos Goytacazes, she started painting in the mid-1990s, studying at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. Her work is deeply rooted in the observation of her surroundings, particularly the urban and natural landscapes viewed from her studio in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Laguna's paintings often feature layered compositions that blend elements of foliage, architecture, and everyday objects, creating a dialogue between abstraction and figuration. Her notable series include Jardim (Garden), Paisagem (Landscape), and Estúdio (Studio), each exploring different facets of her environment. Laguna's process involves initial contributions from her assistants, who apply lines and shapes to the canvas, which she then transforms through overpainting, rotation, and layering, resulting in complex visual narratives. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) and Galerie Karsten Greve in Paris, and she has participated in significant group shows such as the 30th São Paulo Biennial in 2012.
