Le CENTQUATRE – Paris, France
The video installation Swinguerra, by artists Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca, portrays the intense rehearsals of three Afro-Brazilian dance groups in Recife, who compete to the sound of rhythms such as brega funk, batidão do maloka and swingueira. The work, which mixes documentary, fiction and musical, highlights dance as an instrument of community cohesion, self-affirmation and resistance, especially among young black, trans and non-binary people. Originally presented at the Brazilian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, the installation offers an alternative vision of Brazil: young, confident and bold.
