About the artist

Eleonore Koch, also known as Lore Koch, was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1926 and died in São Paulo, Brazil, in 2018. A Brazilian painter and sculptor of German origin, she emigrated with her family to Brazil in 1936, fleeing Nazi persecution, and developed a practice marked by a rigorous attention to drawing, composition, and color. Her work focuses on landscapes, interiors, and still lifes, often evoking everyday objects through a silent and refined painting language, in which chromatic planes, precise lines, and suspended spaces create an atmosphere of memory and contemplation. She studied with artists such as Yolanda Mohalyi, Elisabeth Nobiling, Samson Flexor, Bruno Giorgi, Árpád Szenes, and Robert Coutin, and had a fundamental encounter with Alfredo Volpi, from whom she absorbed an interest in tempera and in the sensitive construction of color. Her works are held in important public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo — MAC USP, the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the São Paulo Museum of Art — MASP, and the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo — MAM SP.
