Julia Isídrez was born in Itá, Paraguay, in 1967, where she lives and works. A Paraguayan artist and ceramicist of Guarani descent, she has developed a sculptural practice in clay deeply rooted in the ancestral ceramic traditions of Itá, passed down within her family by her mother, the ceramicist Juana Marta Rodas. Through hand-modeling and firing techniques, Isídrez transforms folk and utilitarian pottery into a symbolic and expressive language, creating animal figures, hybrid forms, irregular volumes, and organic surfaces that bring together community memory, imagination, ancestry, and formal experimentation. Her work expands the place of Latin American ceramics within contemporary art, preserving local knowledge while translating it into an autonomous sculptural language.
She has participated in major international exhibitions, including the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024; the 14th Mercosur Biennial; DOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel; the Santiago Triennial; and exhibitions at the Museo del Barro in Asunción, as well as recent shows at Kasmin Gallery in New York and Jessica Silverman Gallery in San Francisco. Her works are held in significant institutional collections, including the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris, the Denver Art Museum, and the Museo del Barro in Asunción.
