Mangu Putra was born in Sangeh, Bali, Indonesia, in 1963, and lives and works in Bali. An Indonesian visual artist, he earned a degree in Design and Visual Communication from the Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta and worked as a graphic designer before dedicating himself entirely to the visual arts in the late 1990s. His practice centers primarily on painting—in dialogue with drawing, photography, history, landscape, and Balinese visual culture—to construct images that articulate themes of nature, memory, spirituality, colonialism, tourism, environmental transformation, and cultural identity. In his work, dense landscapes, human figures, animals, ritual objects, and historical atmospheres emerge as sites of tension between tradition and modernity, everyday experience and social critique. Putra has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions both in Indonesia and internationally—including in Singapore, China, South Korea, Australia, and the United Kingdom—and has participated in projects with Gajah Gallery, as well as the exhibition *Teater Rakyat* (Theater of the People) at the National Gallery in Jakarta. To date, no reliable public sources have been identified that confirm the inclusion of Mangu Putra’s works in permanent museum collections.
