Marco A. Castillo was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1971, and lives and works between Havana and Mérida, Mexico. A Cuban visual artist, he graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana and gained international recognition as a co-founder of the collective Los Carpinteros—one of the most influential groups in contemporary Latin American art. His practice spans sculpture, drawing, furniture, and installation, exploring the intersections of architecture, modernism, craftsmanship, design, and Cuban cultural history through materials such as wood, bronze, glass, and ceramics. His work investigates the boundaries between art, functionality, and the object, frequently incorporating references to modernist utopia, Caribbean material culture, and the social and political transformations of Cuba. He has participated in major international exhibitions at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, as well as in biennials such as the Venice Biennale and the Havana Biennial. His works are held in the permanent collections of prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
