Krajcberg

Frans Krajcberg (1921-2017), born in 1921 in Poland, survived the Holocaust and moved to Brazil in 1948, where he encountered the country’s rich biodiversity and natural beauty. His art became a medium through which he expressed his reverence for nature and his grief over the devastation caused by human actions. Throughout his career, Krajcberg employed a variety of media including sculpture, painting, and photography. He is best known for his “tree trunks” sculptures, which used burnt and charred wood salvaged from the aftermath of forest fires. These sculptures carried a profound message about the destructive impact of deforestation and environmental degradation. He often worked directly with natural materials, allowing them to guide his creative process. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Krajcberg was a passionate environmental activist. He advocated for conservation, reforestation, and protecting the Amazon rainforest. His art was intertwined with his activism, as he used his work to raise awareness of the pressing environmental issues facing the world.
