Vik Muniz, while pursuing studies in advertising at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation, took an unconventional path by venturing into the world of theater. In 1982, he embarked on a journey to the United States, where he engaged in a variety of occupations, including waiting tables, working as a gas station attendant, and framing artwork. It was during his time as a framer that his interest in the visual arts was kindled. His move to New York in 1984, following a year spent in Chicago, marked a significant turning point in his artistic exploration. Still in the 1980s, he spent eighteen months in Paris.
Carlos von Schmidt offered insights into his early career in 2001, recounting that, “During his framing days, alongside the kitsch paintings he created to earn a few extra dollars, he began crafting peculiar and unconventional sculptures. It was these sculptures that ultimately opened doors to the New York art scene. His foray into photography emerged when he photographed these sculptures to showcase to potential enthusiasts.” His inaugural solo exhibitions date back to 1989, with displays at Stux Gallery in New York and Stephen Wirtz Gallery in San Francisco. Since then, his work has been showcased in a succession of exhibitions spanning various countries, including France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy, Japan, London, and the United States.
