About the work

Balloon Venus is part of Jeff Koons’ celebrated Antiquity series, in which the artist reinterprets classical motifs through his signature use of industrial materials and pop-inspired aesthetics. Inspired by the Venus of Willendorf, a Paleolithic fertility figure dated around 28,000 BCE, Koons reimagines the ancient archetype as a gleaming, balloon-like form—at once playful and monumental.

Fabricated in mirror-polished stainless steel with a translucent color coating, Balloon Venus embodies Koons’ characteristic fusion of high art, kitsch, and mass culture. The highly reflective surface invites viewers into the work, turning the sculpture into an object of both contemplation and self-recognition. Despite its joyful, toy-like appearance, the piece carries a deep historical resonance, echoing humankind’s earliest artistic impulses toward symbolism and form.

In Balloon Venus, Koons creates a dialogue between antiquity and contemporary materiality, fertility and artificiality, permanence and ephemerality. It exemplifies his enduring exploration of beauty, power, and desire through form and finish.
