Thrower (2019)
Created in 2019, Thrower is a signed, limited edition triptych by the elusive British street artist Banksy. The work deconstructs his iconic 2003 mural Love Is In The Air, depicting a masked protester poised to throw a bouquet of flowers instead of a weapon. This edition comprises three panels—Flower (74.8 x 55 cm), Thrower (91.8 x 61 cm), and Hand (47 x 37.2 cm)—screenprinted on 1500-micron board, each signed and numbered from an edition of 300. employs a manual printmaking technique where stencils were sprayed onto processing film and exposed directly onto silk screens. This method harks back to traditional screenprinting practices, eschewing digital manipulation to achieve a raw, authentic aesthetic .
The triptych format and classical framing challenge conventional art presentation, aligning with Banksy's critique of art commodification. Accompanied by humorous assembly instructions, the piece underscores the artist's intent for art to be displayed and engaged with, rather than hoarded as an investment.
