About the artist

Johanna Calle was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1965, where she lives and works. A Colombian visual artist, her practice spans drawing, printmaking, installation, photography, and artist books, developing a conceptual investigation centered on language, bureaucracy, territory, ecology, and social inequality.

Through meticulous interventions on found documents, legal papers, maps, botanical references, typewriters, and archival materials, Calle transforms administrative and legal systems into visually delicate yet politically charged compositions. Her work examines relationships between violence, land ownership, migration, and environmental exploitation in Colombia and across Latin America.

She has participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the Sydney Biennale, as well as shows at Maison de l’Amérique Latine in Paris, Galeria Marília Razuk in São Paulo, Galerie Krinzinger in Vienna, and Ruiz-Healy Art in the United States.

Her work is held in important institutional collections, including The Museum of Modern Art — MoMA, New York; Tate, London; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Blanton Museum of Art, Austin; and the Museo Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá.
