José Patrício was born in Recife, Brazil, in 1960, where he lives and works. A Brazilian visual artist, his practice spans drawing, objects, sculpture, installation, and painting, exploring systems of order, repetition, mathematical logic, and combinatorial structures through everyday materials such as dominoes, buttons, dice, nails, coins, and plastic pieces. Since the 1990s, he has developed a distinctive visual language based on serial structures, geometric patterns, and numerical relationships, transforming ordinary objects into rigorous, visually hypnotic compositions that balance chance and control, abstraction and materiality, rationality and poetry.
Patrício has participated in major exhibitions and biennials in Brazil and internationally, including the 22nd São Paulo Biennial (1994), the 3rd Mercosul Biennial (2001), and the 8th Havana Biennial (2003), as well as exhibitions at Paço Imperial, Rio de Janeiro; MAMAM, Recife; Fundação Iberê Camargo, Porto Alegre; and Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris. His work is held in major collections including Fondation Cartier, MAMAM, MAM-BA, MAM Rio, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Itaú Cultural, and the João Sattamini Collection/MAC Niterói.
