Juliana Lapa was born in Carpina, Pernambuco, Brazil, in 1985, and lives and works in Recife. A Brazilian visual artist, she has developed a practice centered on drawing and painterly processes, using materials such as graphite, colored pencils, wall filler, egg tempera, and acrylic paint to explore memory, imagination, the body, landscape, and female narratives. Her works bring together intimate and collective, dreamlike and political dimensions through layering, erasure, scraping, and uncovering, transforming the surface into a site of emotional and symbolic excavation. She creates compositions of pronounced material and chromatic density, in which female figures, creatures, imaginary architectures, and inner landscapes emerge as traces of family histories, emotional bonds, losses, and processes of resistance.
Her exhibitions include Olga não me deu nada como herança, her first solo show in São Paulo, at Galeria Claraboia, presented in partnership with Galeria Marco Zero; PARTO, at Casa do Cachorro Preto in Olinda; and exhibitions at Torre Malakoff in Recife. She has also participated in art fairs and projects such as SP-Arte and ArPa with Galeria Marco Zero. To date, no reliable public sources have been found confirming the presence of Juliana Lapa’s works in permanent museum collections.
