Contemporary Artist / Multidisciplinary Visual Artist

About the artist

Júlio Villani was born in Marília, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1956, and lives and works between Paris and São Paulo. A Brazilian visual artist, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, embroidery, ceramics, installation, and interventions on photographs, creating a language shaped by the poetic displacement of objects, memory, humor, and references to popular imagery. A graduate in Fine Arts from FAAP, with further studies at the Watford School of Arts in London and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Villani brings together approaches drawn from Dadaism, Surrealism, the constructivist tradition, and craft, creating hybrid figures, playful narratives, and compositions that connect emotion, identity, word, and matter.

His work has been presented at major institutions in Brazil and abroad, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, MAM São Paulo, MAM Rio, MAM Bahia, Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Museo del Barrio in New York, Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Agen, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Paço Imperial, Casa França-Brasil, and Musée Zadkine. His works are held in significant institutional collections, including the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain in France, the Musées de la Ville de Paris, the Maison de l’Amérique Latine, Sesc, and other public and private collections.
