Lia D Castro was born in Martinópolis, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1978, and lives and works in São Paulo. A Brazilian visual artist, intellectual, writer, and educator, she has developed a practice spanning painting, drawing, photography, writing, and research, exploring the relationships between race, class, gender, sexuality, intimacy, vulnerability, and structures of power. Her works emerge from encounters, conversations, and moments of closeness, creating figurative images marked by affection, critical tension, and social reflection, in which bodies, domestic interiors, reading scenes, and relationships of care become sites for examining representation, masculinity, racism, transphobia, and symbolic violence.
Working with oil on canvas, charcoal, soft pastel, pen, woodcut, and materials such as medical adhesive tape, Castro brings together personal experience, social history, and decolonial thought in compositions that question the hierarchies of art history and propose new forms of presence, listening, and recognition. She has held major institutional exhibitions, including Lia D Castro: em todo e nenhum lugar at MASP — Museu de Arte de São Paulo in 2024, her first solo exhibition at a Brazilian museum, and Lia D Castro: O espaço do corpo at the Museu Paranaense in Curitiba that same year, as well as solo exhibitions at Galeria Jaqueline Martins in São Paulo and Brussels and presentations through Martins&Montero. To date, no reliable public sources have been found confirming the presence of Lia D Castro’s works in permanent museum collections.
