About the artist
Márcia Falcão (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1985) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. Her artistic practice is primarily centered on figurative painting, exploring the relationships between the female body, racial identity, gender, and social conflict. Drawing from her personal experiences and the suburban landscape of Rio de Janeiro, Falcão develops powerful compositions that examine the complexities of Black female identity, motherhood, beauty standards, and systemic violence. Through expressive brushwork, thick layers of paint, and a palette dominated by earthy tones, deep reds, and blacks, the artist creates visceral images in which figuration and abstraction intersect. Her paintings explore the tension between vulnerability and resilience, violence and intimacy, transforming the body into a site of both personal experience and collective narratives. Falcão's work has gained increasing international recognition through solo exhibitions including Corpo de Cor at Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin (2025), Monuments of Flesh at Night Gallery, Los Angeles (2024), and Pai Contra Mãe at Instituto Inclusartiz, Rio de Janeiro (2023). She also participated in the 36th São Paulo Biennial (2025), consolidating her position within contemporary Brazilian painting.
