About the artist

Miriam Cahn was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1949, and lives and works between Basel and Bergell, in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. As a Swiss artist, she engages in a practice that spans painting, drawing, watercolor, writing, performance, and film, articulating reflections on the body, war, violence, feminism, historical memory, nature, and the human condition. Shaped by the post-war context, the nuclear threat, feminist movements, and contemporary political crises, Cahn creates images of intense emotional power, in which human figures, animals, plants, and architectural elements emerge within twilight landscapes and atmospheres of tension. Her works—often characterized by direct, spontaneous strokes, vibrant colors, and forms lacking rigid outlines—interrogate the boundaries between vulnerability, resistance, destruction, and survival. She has participated in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, documenta 14 in Kassel, and the 21st Biennale of Sydney, as well as shows at institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the Kunsthaus Bregenz, and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. Her work is held in the permanent collections of prominent institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Kunstmuseum Basel, and the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw.
