Nelson Leirner (1932–2020) was a Brazilian artist renowned for his provocative and satirical approach to contemporary art. Born in São Paulo to a family deeply embedded in the arts—his mother, Felícia Leirner, was a sculptor, and his father, Isaí Leirner, directed the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo—he was exposed to modern art from an early age. Despite this, Leirner initially pursued textile engineering in the United States but returned to Brazil in the 1950s to study painting, marking the beginning of his artistic career.
