About the artist

Pascale Marthine Tayou was born in Nkongsamba, Cameroon, in 1966, and lives and works between Ghent, Belgium, and Yaoundé, Cameroon. An internationally recognized Cameroonian contemporary artist, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing installation, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, performance, and assemblage. His work explores globalization, migration, cultural identity, consumerism, environmental concerns, and the complexities of postcolonial relations. Since the early 1990s, Tayou has challenged conventional distinctions between artistic disciplines and cultural identities, embracing an experimental approach that reflects the interconnectedness of contemporary society. His decision to feminize his first and middle names reflects his interest in questioning established notions of authorship, gender, and identity.

Working with an extensive range of materials—including found objects, plastic bags, textiles, wood, glass, crystal, and everyday consumer goods—Tayou transforms familiar objects into visually striking installations and sculptural environments. His practice investigates the circulation of people, commodities, and ideas across geographical and cultural boundaries, often juxtaposing traditional African references with the material language of global consumer culture. Through vibrant colors, unconventional materials, and immersive spatial compositions, he addresses questions of belonging, displacement, collective memory, and environmental responsibility. His celebrated Poupées Pascale series, incorporating crystal and found materials, exemplifies his exploration of cultural hybridity and the symbolic transformation of everyday objects.

Tayou gained international recognition through his participation in documenta 11 in Kassel (2002), the 25th São Paulo Biennial (2002), and the Venice Biennale (2005 and 2009). His work has been presented in major international institutions, including the Serpentine Galleries in London, Bozar in Brussels, the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, and MUDAM Luxembourg. In 2025, he presented BRAZILISM at A Gentil Carioca in São Paulo, in collaboration with Galleria Continua, and TCHÂM: Confidences at Galleria Continua / Les Moulins in France. His works are held in significant public and institutional collections, including Tate Modern in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, MUDAM Luxembourg, the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, and the Pinault Collection, affirming his position as an influential figure in contemporary African and international art.
