Shara Hughes (b. 1981, Atlanta, Georgia) is an American painter celebrated for her vibrant, imaginative landscapes that blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Hughes further honed her craft at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her work is characterized by dynamic brushwork, bold color palettes, and shifting perspectives, often depicting surreal terrains filled with undulating forms and symbolic flora. Hughes's intuitive process involves painting without preliminary sketches, allowing each piece to evolve organically. This approach results in compositions that are both emotionally resonant and visually arresting. Her paintings have been exhibited internationally, including a notable presentation at the 2017 Whitney Biennial, and are part of esteemed collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Hughes continues to push the boundaries of contemporary landscape painting.
