About the artist

Nádia Taquary (Salvador, 1967) is a Salvador-based sculptor and visual artist whose work explores African ancestry and Afro-Brazilian heritage through a contemporary lens. She incorporates materials such as reclaimed wood, gold, silver, beads, cowrie shells, and straw into sculptures, installations, and video works, creating pieces that embody ancestral wisdom, ritual, and empowerment.

Her series Oríki pays homage to Yoruba culture, transforming sculptural hairstyles into symbols of reverence and strength, while Dinkas Orixás and Yabás evoke sacred traditions and warrior spirits, bridging past and present. Taquary’s work also challenges Eurocentric and patriarchal narratives, reclaiming space for Black women’s knowledge and cultural memory.

She has exhibited internationally, including solo shows such as ÔOnã Irin: Caminho de Ferro (MAR, Rio de Janeiro, 2023; Museu Nacional da Cultura Afro-Brasileira, Salvador), and group exhibitions at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, and El Museo del Barrio, New York. She participated in the 24th Sydney Biennale (2024), the 15th Bienal de La Habana (2025), and is  featured in the 36th São Paulo Bienal (2025). Other notable exhibitions include Red Atlantic (Geneva, 2024), Dos Brasis (São Paulo, Petrópolis, 2023–2024), and The Precious Life of a Liquid Heart (New York, 2023).
