Raul Mourão (b. 1967, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian multimedia artist whose work spans sculpture, painting, video, photography, installation, and performance. Emerging in the late 1980s, Mourão became known for his critical and humorous engagement with urban visual culture, particularly the symbols and structures of public life in Brazil. His early series "Grades" (Fences) recontextualized security barriers from Rio's streets into artworks that questioned notions of safety, control, and the aesthetics of urban architecture. Over time, his practice evolved to include kinetic sculptures—large-scale, geometric iron structures that oscillate between balance and instability—reflecting on the tensions between order and chaos in contemporary society. Mourão studied at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage and has exhibited widely in Brazil and internationally, including at institutions such as MAM-Rio, Paço Imperial, and the Mercosul Biennial. His work continues to explore the intersections of art, politics, and everyday life, often drawing from the visual language of sports, signage, and urban infrastructure.
