David Alfaro Siqueiros was a Mexican social realist painter, best known for his large public murals using the latest in equipment, materials and technique. Along with Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, he was one of the most famous of the “Mexican muralists”.

Siqueiros was a member of the Mexican Communist Party and took part in the Mexican Revolution as a member of Venustiano Carranza’s constitutionalist army. A communist activist, he fought in the Spanish Civil War with the Republican army and was involved in an assassination attempt on the founder of the Red Army, Leon Trotsky, in 1940.

He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1966.
