Lucia Laguna embarked on her artistic journey by enrolling at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage, a prominent art school in Rio de Janeiro, in 1995. Originally from an inland hometown, she relocated to the capital at a young age to teach Portuguese at public schools. Upon retiring from teaching at the age of 54, Laguna fully immersed herself in painting, transforming her home in the suburban Rio neighborhood of São Francisco Xavier into her studio—a place deeply connected to her visual references and pictorial language.
In 1998, Laguna unveiled her inaugural solo exhibition at the Cândido Mendes Cultural Centre in Rio de Janeiro. A pivotal moment in her career occurred in 2012 when she participated in the 30th Bienal de São Paulo. This marked a decisive turning point, with the architecturally oriented abstractions of her early paintings evolving to incorporate collage-like image citations.
Since then, Laguna has been featured in major solo exhibitions, including “Vizinhança” at MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo (2018) and “Enquanto bebo a água, a água me bebe” at MAR – Museu de Arte do Rio (2016). Represented by Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel (São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro) since 2010, she presented her inaugural solo show at Sadie Coles HQ (London) in 2022. Her works can be found in public collections such as MASP, MAM-SP, MAM-RJ, MAR, and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, among others.
