The 56th edition of the Rencontres d’Arles, one of the main international photography festivals, is highlighting Brazil with the Ancestral Futures exhibition. The show brings together Brazilian artists who give new meaning to visual archives and traditions through photography, video and collage.
With works by Denilson Baniwa, Ventura Profana, Gê Viana, Mayara Ferrão, Yhuri Curz, Igi Ayedun, Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Rafa Bqueer, Lincoln Péricles, Melissa Oliveira, Glicéria Tupinambá and the Lakapoy collective, the exhibition challenges historical narratives, denounces violence against Afro-Brazilian, indigenous and LGBTQIA+ communities and proposes new representations of beauty, affection and spirituality.
The event also features the retrospective Claudia Andujar – In Others’ Place, which revisits a little-explored period of the photographer’s life before her immersion with the Yanomami. The result of two years of research, the exhibition highlights her contribution to documentary and experimental photography in the 1960s and 1970s in Brazil. The exhibition brings together essential series from her career, such as Famílias Brasileiras, her work for Realidade magazine, A Sônia, Rua Direita and her first forays into the Amazon, highlighting her connection with marginalized communities, her graphic experimentation and her ecological sensitivity.
