Since 2018, Adriano Pedrosa, director of MASP, has been driving Brazilian art movement forward through annual curatorial projects — culminating in his role as curator of the 30th Venice Biennale.
Brazil’s emphasis on land rights, Afro-Brazilian spirituality, and LGBTQ+ experiences reflects its dynamic socio-political landscape, challenging a global art market still largely anchored in Western ideals.
Carmo Johnson Projects will present the Huni Kuin collective, with paintings that preserve ancestral knowledge and explore their culture’s relationship with the land.
The collective was invited by Pedrosa to create a mural on the Giardini pavilion in Venice, depicting the alligator bridge, a creature symbolizing the link between Asia and the Americas.
Galeria Vermelho will present Claudia Andujar’s photographic series Casulo humano (mortuary rite), which documents the life and cosmovision of the Yanomami, reinforcing her defense of indigenous rights.
Portas Vilaseca gallery will present an installation by Heráclito and Nádia Taquary, featuring Taquary’s bronze sculpture Yam and Heráclito’s watercolors of orishas.
Continuing its commitment to Afro-Brazilian traditions, Galatea will present José Adário dos Santos’ iron Candomblé statues in the Positions section of Art Basel Miami Beach.
Featuring a mix of self-taught artists, Galeria Estação showcases Aurelino dos Santos detailed paintings, and Agnaldo, sculptures inspired by traditional boat figureheads from the São Francisco River.
