Having become a naturalized Brazilian, Mira Schendel arrived in the country in 1949, initially settling in Porto Alegre. Later, she made her way to São Paulo, where she established her home until the end of her life. Schendel’s artistic talent became evident early in her career, with her debut solo exhibitions in Porto Alegre in 1950 and 1952. By 1954, she graced the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo, cementing her status as a prominent figure in the Brazilian art scene. Her exhibitions quickly extended beyond national boundaries, leaving an enduring mark on galleries throughout Europe and North America. Her influence reached some of the most prestigious international art events. Schendel’s participation in the Venice Biennale in 1968 and 1978, as well as her gold medal win at the 2nd Triennale of India in 1971, underscored her global acclaim. In closer proximity, her active involvement in the São Paulo Biennial was frequent and highly impactful, highlighted by notable achievements such as the acquisition prize in 1967 and the dedication of a special room to her work in 1994. Mira Schendel’s enduring legacy continues to illuminate the art world, serving as an inspiration to generations with her profound contributions.
