About the artist

Frida Kahlo, the celebrated Mexican painter renowned for her intricate self-portraits, drew inspiration from pre-Columbian artifacts and Mexican folk art. André Breton, a Surrealist, once called her works "a ribbon around a bomb," capturing their peculiar beauty. Born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo Calderón on July 6, 1907, in Mexico City, she faced a life-altering bus accident at 18, leading her to embrace painting during her recovery. Abandoning her earlier studies, she later connected with Diego Rivera, a Mexican muralist, whom she married, divorcing and remarrying amidst a tumultuous relationship.
