Paulo Nazareth (b. 1977) is a Brazilian contemporary artist renowned for his interdisciplinary practice that intertwines performance, photography, and installation to explore themes of race, migration, and postcolonial identity. Born in Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Nazareth studied at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, where he earned his BFA and MFA. His art often involves extensive journeys on foot across the Americas and Africa, during which he engages with diverse communities, documenting these interactions to challenge perceptions of Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous identities. Notable works include Notícias de América (2011), a project where he traveled from Brazil to the U.S. without washing his feet, symbolically confronting racial and cultural boundaries, and Banana Market / Art Market, which critiques global trade and stereotypes through the display of bananas in art contexts. Nazareth's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, MoMA in New York, and the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Represented by galleries such as Mendes Wood DM and Meyer Riegger, his practice continues to provoke critical discourse on social and political issues affecting marginalized communities.
