Born in Italy, she emigrated with his family in 1954 to Caracas, Venezuela, where she studied at the Cristóbal Rojas School of Plastic Artsuntil she moved to Brazil. In 1961, she started a wood engraving course in Rio de Janeiro and joined the New Figuration movement, which reacted to abstraction and addressed Brazilian politics. She had her first solo exhibition at the G Gallery in Caracas. In 1967, she took part in the New Brazilian Objectivity.

Between 1968 and 1971, Anna Maria Maiolino studied at the Pratt Graphic Centre in New York. From the 1970s onwards, she began working with different media, such as installation, photography and film. She took part in the 1st Super-8 Film Festival in Curitiba, winning a prize for her film “In-Out – Antropofagia”, her first video work. At the end of the 1970s, she focused on performances. In 1990, she was awarded the prize for best show of the year by the Brazilian Association of Art Critics (ABCA) for her solo exhibition in 1989 at the Cândido Mendes Cultural Centre. Anna Maria Maiolino’s work is included in more than 30 collections of museums and cultural institutions in Brazil and abroad.
